Description
Virginia Tyler won a Fulbright fellowship to study West African metal casting in Ghana in 1998-99. She has continued to collaborate with the metal casters for the past 14 years, sometimes in their village of Krofofrom in Ghana, sometimes in the US. She will show photos of them demonstrating their technique. This is a thousand year-old process Thayer they still practice today. She sill also show photos of her collaborative projects with the Ashanti craftsmen, especially Paul Amponsah and Joseph Agyemang, her mentor. She will bring samples of the materials they use, including rainforest charcoal and beeswax, demonstrate the techniques, and invite participants to use them as well.
