Event Title
Exhibitions & Museum Studies, Collaborations at the Burchfieldl Penney Art Center
Start Date

Description
SUNY Buffalo State graduate and undergraduate students have worked with art, library, and archival collections of the Burchfield Penney Art Center and E. H. Butler Library to create exhibitions at the museum’s Collection Study Gallery and in other City of Buffalo venues during the past few years. Nancy Weekly, the Burchfield Penney Instructor of Museum Studies, has supervised students to interpret and present objects to visitors with different interests. Together their research explored connections with local history, literature, and aesthetic achievements of Western New York artists. Past projects included the Buffalo theater community’s tribute to prize-winning playwright, Edward Albee; the first public display of selections from The Madeline Davis Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual Transgender Archives at Buffalo State College; and parallel presentations “Elements of Steel” and “Heart of Steel” premiering a new acquisition of 20th-century prints by Niels Yde Andersen. The Monroe Fordham Regional History Center provided support for exhibitions held at the Smith Theater (in collaboration with Road Less Traveled Productions) and the Karpeles Manuscript Library Museum. Projects underway this semester focus on photography by Marion Faller and Milton Rogovin. Marion Faller (b. 1941) documents cultural traditions and public displays celebrating seasonal events, folklore, popular religious customs, and displays of patriotism. Milton Rogovin (1909-2011) captured a vital portrait of American life—the contributions of working and everyday people around the globe. Among his series are: “Appalachia,” “Storefront Churches,” “Lower West Side,” and “Family of Miners.” Nancy Weekly will present these and previous projects in a PowerPoint presentation.
