Department Chair: Andrew D. Nicholls

History Department

History is the study of the development of ideas and events that shape the growth of people and institutions. Programs in the History and Social Studies Education Department ensure both a knowledge and an understanding of the foundations of human civilization, stimulate thinking about the evolution and interaction of ideas, develop facility with written and verbal expression, increase confidence in articulating ideas, and encourage the critical awareness of self so important to an educated individual. History majors are prepared for careers in business or government and for graduate study in history or law. Social studies education majors are prepared to teach social studies, including history, in both middle and high schools.
