During the Chaco War, 1932-1935, which pitted the two landlocked nations of Bolivia and Paraguay against each other over the vast Chaco frontier, playwrights in the Paraguayan capital of Asuncion wrote about the hardships the war brought for the Paraguayan rural classes. The plays were designed to bring attention to both the material sacrifices of the Paraguayan countryside and the physical and mental tolls the war took on the Paraguayan citizen. These plays, performed in the Paraguayan city of Asuncion and other urban areas made the hardships of the countryside to the city so that urban viewers could understand the realities and challenges of rural dwellers.
