Abstract
This is a qualitative, action research study focused on how an individualized art curriculum developed by teacher and student, affects the student’s view on art, career path, and self. The study participants include nine students with the same Individual Learning Program (ILP) teacher, who chose to help them create their own curriculum in art, based on their own interests and/or relating art to their future college major. All nine students are juniors and seniors taking their third year of art. The study documents the educational process an art teacher and her ILP students took from beginning the formation of a formal written curriculum (individualized to each student), to the completion of their projects due at the end of the third quarter marking period. In general taking an ILP positively motivated all nine students by giving them ownership and an active role in their learning. The project revealed that taking an ILP tailored specifically to a future college major or future career, made students feel that art was more valuable and relevant to their lives than they had previously thought before taking the ILP. In conclusion, taking an Individualized Learning Program in art had a positive affect on student learning, and has increased the value that art has in their lives.
