Abstract

ABSTRACT

During the preparation of becoming a certified teacher in a visual art classroom, I had decided what style of teaching I would want to utilize. I wanted an approach that allowed the students to become self-directed learners which is also defined as using a constructivist teaching method. The students build learning techniques on previous experiences, thought processes, practical strategies, believed ethics, behavioral manners, and particular perceptions. Through constructivist learning the students are taught with different teaching methods and styles so that each student is given an opportunity to learn because each person is different. A constructivist teaching methods approach to lesson planning helps teachers to design activities for all of the different possible learning structures that the students can possess. When contemplating a final thesis topic, I began to wonder what other approaches of teaching were being used in a visual art classroom and my interest in the constructivist learning theory deepened. Do teachers use different methods of teaching in their lesson planning? If so, what do they want their students to learn? Are there different approaches to teaching in a fine arts studio art class and an applied (crafts) art workshop class? If so, what styles to teaching are being used? With this in mind, I also wondered what type of learning was being administered.

The following is an investigation through research to understand what teaching methods are used in a visual arts classroom. Can a constructivist learning theory be applied to teaching fine arts or applied arts? Is the style of teaching used effectively to control concerns of students’ behavior? This study was conducted to discover ways that a constructivist teaching approach is utilized in a visual art classroom for teaching either fine arts or applied arts as well as in which ways behavior is monitored and assessed through this method.
