Abstract
Exploring Mutually Beneficial Possibilities between
Literacy and the Visual Arts
In this paper I will present information pertaining to the relationship between the arts and academic achievement, specifically concentrating on incorporating literacy techniques into the art room. The definition of what it means to be literate and how this definition is changing will also be discussed. Information regarding studies related to art education and student achievement in school will be presented. I will present examples of how several teachers are incorporating literacy and the arts into their classrooms. I will present areas of concern in regards to the research to date and a description of the type of research I have conducted.
I will present the results I obtained from my research. These results will provide answers to the following questions: (1) What kinds of activities and teaching techniques could provide instruction that is reciprocally supportive of the visual arts and the English language arts? (2) What connections and similarities exist between the visual arts and the English language arts? (3) What kind of teaching and learning take place in literacy instruction? (4) What kinds of authentic learning can be included in art instruction to assist students in developing visual literacy?
Lastly, I will show the conclusions that I obtained from these results and give recommendations based on these conclusions. These conclusions and recommendations will provide guidance for how literacy inclusion in the arts can move forward in a mutually beneficial way.
