Abstract
Historical research reveals that two commercially produced photograph albums in the collection of the Buffalo and Erie County Public Library contain cyanotype contact prints and gelatin silver photographic reproductions of stereo views made by Buffalo photographer Charles L. Pond. The stereo views were cut in half and pasted as individual images in each album. The manufacture and degradation mechanisms of cyanotypes are explored, with experimental aqueous treatments of cyanotypes including deionized, alkaline, and hydrogen peroxide water baths and light bleaching. Results are evaluated using spectrophotometry and x-ray fluorescence spectroscopy (XRF) analysis. No correlation between color change and change in iron content following treatment was found. Treatment includes stabilization of the albums and surface cleaning of the photographs.
