Welcome to our spring season concert "We've Got Rythm", as we celebrate some of the most influential music written in the 20th century by American composers. What a pleasure it is for the BGMC to bring music from the American Songbook alive for you this evening; music that many of you have asked us to perform for years. I believe it is also a very poignant time for LGBT Americans as we celebrate composers who brought us iconic music, some of which has been embraced for decades by our community but also some who were gay themselves.

Our beloved Director, Barbara Wagner is retiring and passing the conductor's want onto a new Artistic Director. Barbara has taken the men of the BGMC from poor performers to a well-known and sought after singing group in just 9 years.

Once Upon a Time

BGMC has taken a different spin on "Once upon a tIme." We are using it in our oral storytelling through singing. The concert you are about to hear is very near and dear to our hearts. There are bits of the concert that will sadden, frighten and even inspire you. This is the story of our lives. This music is a way for us to share with you, our loyal patrons, what we felt, dealt with, and eventually ended up with throughout our lives. With 70+ men in our chorus, the entire story is not entirely ours, but each and every man singing before you tonight has experienced or lived through one or more of these songs and emotions.

The school year would drag on forever. We could hardly stand the last week of school, and exam week was so stressful. What would it be like to be a young kid in todays days of uncertainty? Would you trade any of your life for a new beginning?

What makes a concert great? This is possibly one of the hardest questions we ask ourselves after every concert series concludes. Each concert evening, while speaking with our Patrons in the receiving line, one comment is repeated over and over, "you guys sure look like you are having fun!" We are indeed. We love putting these events together for your enjoyment. We see your faces during our performances, the smiles, the laughter and the tears. We feel strongly about our service to the community and the joy we try to bring to you, our beloved audiences.

I believe Hope for the Holidays is the most appropriate topic for us to consider in these trying times. With so many changes taking place affecting us all, the time for examining one's inner self is greater than ever before. Perhaps the market conditions are a necessary evil, probably long overdue, forcing us to open our eyes to what really matters. Whichever way we choose to look at it, change is required.

The Colors of Our Lives

Buffalo Gay Men's Chorus

"The Colors of Our Lives" has very special meaning for me. I see and hear music in textures and colors. The words have texture and color. The songs we sing, the moods they express are in bright technicolor. I think this may be the very reason that new music is so exciting to me. What will I see in my mind's eye as I read the music and the text to myself "To Singing," one of my favorite songs on this concert, is a huge rainbow of colors. We're taken from the bleak grays of a questioning child tormented by slashing school yard taunts to the dark green of security among his singing brothers and again back to the navy blue hopelessness of lost parents and the cold rejection of family.The dark, rich colors of night are filled with glowing yellows as the music brings light to the boy. There is a myriad of soft colors, as the singers (my beloved singers) help him preen his soft, feathery, red tipped wings.Their songs soar above the puffy white clouds as the tenors and basses sing the shining songs of love. Our young man has found the sparkling joy of the oranges, yellows, purples and shiny reds and warm browns of the men who love him. It's all very romantic, but then, so is singing for us. I hope that you too will be as enchanted by the "colors of our lives" as we have been during these past few months of rehearsal.

Although our spring musical program for 2006 is ostensibly focused on entertainment, light fun, and Americana, it is no coincidence that the Buffalo Gay Men's Chorus has chosen songs which speak seriously of liberation -- not only of gay and lesbian people, but also the liberation of Africans and AfricanAmericans, and liberation from the restrictive historical trappings of certain music itself.

A Winter's Tale

"In the bleak mid winter," the poet tells us, "frosty wind made moan. "For those who have grown up in Buffalo and Western New York, window scrapers, snow plows, anti-freeze, insulated doors, down jackets, ear muffs, and gloves have become a way of life. We may pride ourselves on having "three and a half seasons," but it is the "Buffalo winter" that has given the city its notoriety. Ice storms, blizzards, twenty five mile-an-hour winds, lake effects, school closings, the morning traffic reports have all become part of the litany of language that seems to define us more readily than the somber orange and red colors of fall or the glistening green-filled summer days in Delaware Park.
