Abstract
The 17th century Italian drawing St. Andrew Before his Cross, by Francesco Albani, was studied and treated as part of an ongoing collaboration between the Buffalo State Art Conservation Department and the Allen Memorial Art Museum in Oberlin College. Through the technical study of the piece, the materials employed by the artist were identified. It was determined that Albani used the following media to render the image: graphite, sepia ink, and white lead paint in areas of highlights. Since the drawing exhibited the phenomenon of lead white discoloration, a brief discussion of the issue and its relevance in the field of paper conservation was undertaken. Lastly, readability of the drawing was recovered through conservation treatment. The technical information gathered, as well as the reduction of visual noise in the image, will hopefully aid scholars in the efforts to elucidate the drawing’s attribution to Albani.
