Abstract
This specialization project encompasses the technical study and conservation treatment of an early 17th century Italian oil on wood panel painting loosely attributed to the Circle of Orazio Gentileschi: Madonna and Child with Two Angels. This painting previously had only a small amount of related information with regards to provenance and attribution, and the goals of this technical study and treatment were to determine a possible date of manufacture as well as to learn more about the artist’s materials and techniques in the hopes of establishing a better timeline of production. X-Ray Fluorescence, Scanning Electron Microscopy, Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy, and Pyrolysis-Gas Chromatography-Mass Spectroscopy were utilized in order to gain a more thorough understanding of the materials present on the panel, and treatment was completed in order to return the painting to a condition level appropriate for exhibition at the Loyola University Museum of Art.
