Abstract
Joseph Piccillo’s Wall Painting L. J. M. #5, (ca. 1965) is a large mixed media painting on canvas (dimensions) owned by the Nichols School in Buffalo, NY. Due to its poor condition, it was brought to the Garman Art Conservation Program for technical analysis and treatment. Imaging and scientific analysis was used to identify the variety of materials present in the largescale mixed-media painting. An artist interview was conducted to learn about Piccillo’s style throughout his career and acquire more information related to the materials and construction of the painting. Overall, the painting was in poor condition, with the most prominent conservation concerns including cracking around the perimeter of the painting due to uneven stress from the paper adhered in the center, cracks and losses in the paper, and loss of adhesion resulting in air pockets between layers. This paper centers around the decoding of the painting’s structure in order to understand the construction process, researching and testing of materials, and using the results to implement the most appropriate course of treatment. Finally, the treatment and stabilization of the painting allows it to return to an exhibitable state at the Nichols School.
