Abstract
A banjo clock featuring reverse glass painted panels with unknown provenance was assessed for conservation treatment. Research into the aesthetics and functionality of the clock, manufacture of clocks in the early United States, patent laws, and historic clock repair was conducted to support the proposed identification of this piece as a 19th century American clock. Conservation ethics regarding functional objects were considered and previous treatments of reverse glass paintings were studied. Materials within the many elements of the clock were analyzed and extensive adhesive testing was executed to find the appropriate consolidant to stabilize the painted glass panels. Treatment was started and a full methodology was planned.
