Abstract
Treatment of two 17th century English leather tight-back bindings using minimally invasive techniques to stabilize and maintain the original bindings of these two devotional texts. The bindings were compared and contrasted based on the economy measures employed in the production of these books. Each book had spine damage including loss of endcaps extending down to the first and last sewing supports, broken sewing threads throughout the bookblock, and misalignment of multiple gatherings within the bookblock. Historical models were created to further understand the functionality of the bindings, as well as the method in which the books were imposed, forwarded, and finished. Both treatments were successful in salvaging original materials while reinforcing vulnerable areas and reintegrating otherwise deteriorated aspects of the original material.
